Changing Climates

Copenhagen, Denmark. In traveling half way across the planet to attend COP15, one can’t help but marvel at another form of climate change – the individual journey of passing from one climate to another as you move around the globe.  The days prior to leaving for Copenhagen, Monterey (California) was warm, sunny and spectacularly clear.  Yet on Saturday morning, after a 5 hour flight across the continent, I landed in a snow-blasted northern Virginia. It was the region’s first snow storm of the season and apparently caught the airport by surprise, resulting in numerous flight delays.  Nevertheless, we did make it on to Denmark where, at a cloudy and rainy 7C, it’s actually considered warm for this time of the year.

Despite the winter weather, the human climate in Copenhagen is far from frigid.  Dubbing themselves Hopenhagen, the city is alive with climate fervor – proud of their role in hosting the UNFCCC and committed to becoming the first carbon neutral capital city.
