Solutions

The Center for Ocean Solutions Initiative

The goals of the Center’s work on climate change are to develop innovative solutions to enhance ecosystem and human community resiliency to climate change impacts and to improve the policies governing climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Center will implement research, education and communication strategies to achieve these goals.

 Research

Scientists at MBARI, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Stanford University are working to improve our understanding of how ocean ecosystems react to increased greenhouse gas concentrations in order to identify areas that may be inherently more resilient to climate change.

 Adapt

Recognizing that there exist inevitable impacts from climate change, COS is working with partners to develop workshops to help marine resource managers and coastal planners develop plans to allow both humans and coastal and marine ecosystems to adapt to climate change. COS researchers are also developing institutional approaches to enhance the adaptability of marine and coastal resource governance in the face of climate change.

Communicate

There is a significant discrepancy between the level of concern expressed by a large number of climate scientists, and that expressed by the public. COS will support research to create new, innovative communication strategies to increase the public’s understanding of climate change impacts on the ocean and the implications for society.
