Ocean Leadership Curriculum

The Center for Ocean Solutions works to create sharable workshop and course curriculum from our leadership development activities for use by our partners, collaborators, and other education programs. Our curriculum incorporates learner-centered design, as well as problem-based, and active learning pedagogy.

In this lesson, students manage cumulative effects in coastal marine ecosystems while learning to apply the scientific and policy principles necessary to make coastal management decisions.

Lesson Plan: Story Maps and Science Communication

Using Story Maps as an Effective Science Communication Tool

This training will integrate mapping and science communication to support the application of a spatial storytelling platform. This hands-on lab was developed to introduce students to the concept of creating effective story maps, why story maps are useful for communicating scientific information, and the challenges associated with creating story maps.

Grade Levels: Graduate/Undergraduate/11-12th Grade; students in environmental/ marine science or geospatial studies

Lesson Plan: Coastal Vulnerability Modeling

Coastal Vulnerability Modeling: Mapping the Coastal Protection Benefits Provided by the Natural Environment

In this lesson, students will learn the geospatial modeling workflow using the InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Tradeoffs) by applying a Coastal Vulnerability Model to a case study area in Vancouver Island. Students will also build spatial reasoning and problem solving skills necessary to effectively translate science to policy using a GIS.
