Overview

The coastal ocean represents the major interface between humans and the marine environment, making coastal ecosystems those most heavily impacted by human activity. Coastal habitats provide many important services such as sheltering diverse marine organisms, buffering terrestrial habitats from wave action and flooding and supporting recreation and tourism. The Center for Ocean Solutions is taking an interdisciplinary approach to identifying and resolving these challenges. Human impacts on the coastal environment include:

  • fishing pressure
  • industrial pollution
  • habitat modification
  • agricultural runoff

Environmental Sample Processor (ESP)

Is my beach safe today? The Center aims to create a tool for measuring water quality in near-real time for human health.

Environmental DNA

The eDNA project uses the DNA present in a glass of seawater to monitor the biodiversity and distribution of marine animals in the ocean.

Coastal Adaptation Projects: INCCAP and the REIP grant

Our coastal adaptation projects work to enable coastal managers with a broader range of planning options for adapting to climate change.

EcoPrinciples Connect

The EcoPrinciples Connect tool will link publicly available data to resource management needs through the lens of ecological principles.
