With the Center for Ocean Solutions (COS), Fiorenza Micheli is involved in programs focusing on ecosystem health and marine spatial planning. She also serves as a member of the COS Fellowship & Curriculum Committee. Micheli is a Professor of Marine Ecology at Stanford University. Her research focus on the processes shaping marine communities, particularly species interactions, species-habitat relationships, and the effects of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on the coastal marine environment. Her research seeks to apply marine community ecology to the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems. Examples include quantifying the cumulative impacts of multiple stressors of marine ecosystems, and incorporating an understanding of diversity patterns, species interactions, habitat-species linkages, and human use of natural resources in the design and evaluation of marine reserve networks and marine zoning. Micheli has been honored as a Pew Marine Fellow 2009, Chambers Fellow 2008, Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow 2004, Hellman Faculty Scholar 2003 and California Academy of Science Fellow. She is a member of the Science Advisory Committee for the World Wildlife Fund (Rome, Italy), and of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary research activity panel. Professor Micheli received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a postdoctoral researcher at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, where she continues to conduct collaborative research.
